Greg and Bexhill Athletic Youth Football Club, from L to R: Gary McGrath (Coach) Tom Walker (Coach) Mike Barrett (Chairman), Greg Barker (MP) Joanne Pym (Fundraiser) Ian Tiltman (Coach) Amy Woollard (Treasurer).
Town MP Greg Barker met Chairman of Bexhill Athletic Youth Football Club, Mike Barrett at the club’s practice session on the Downs on Friday, to hear about their campaign to secure a home ground.
The football club, formed in 2007, now incorporates seven different age groups from under 5s to under 12s. Mike Barrett and his coaches explained to Greg the club needs a proper home ground in order to accommodate the growing numbers of youngsters keen to join. All of the club’s coaches are CRB checked and attend the relevant coaching courses to ensure a safe environment for all the children concerned.
The patch of land they currently play at, on Bexhill Downs, becomes unusable in winter when the ground becomes waterlogged, and Mike believes a home ground will provide a greater tie with the local community.
Speaking in Bexhill Greg said:
“When David Cameron talks about the Big Society, it is community groups just like this he has in mind. We need to do more to support our young kids in the town and I hope that we can work to find them a better long term place to play and practice their new skills.”
