Greg builds on knowledge of brick industry during Ashdown factory visit
7 June 2012
Greg learnt how Ashdown Brickworks on Turkey Road has managed to remain competitive during the current challenging economic climate during his informative visit to the Bexhill brickworks and quarry last Friday.
The Ashdown Brickworks, part of Ibstock Brick Limited, continue to make local brick “Bexhill Reds” both by hand and by machine at their factory in north Bexhill. The factory employs more staff now than it did 30 years ago and makes a significant contribution to the local economy.
Greg was given a guided tour of the factory and quarry by Factory Manager Mr Steve Chapman. This was followed by presentations and discussions on the brick industry with Mr Wayne Sheppard, Managing Director of Ibstock, Dr David Hills, Sustainability Manager for Ibstock and Dr Laura Cohen, Chief Executive of the British Ceramics Confederation.
Speaking at the factory, Greg said “It was good to go back to Ashdown Brickworks to hear how this important local employer is continuing to thrive despite the challenging economic environment.
Although the huge clay pit still has many years of life ahead of it, now landfill is off the agenda we need to start thinking creatively as to how this huge area of land can be restored and handed back to the community at the end of its working life.”
